Funeral Poems

We little knew that morning God was to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again.

Oh, Little Butterfly, Messenger of God, When I see you in the sky, I cannot help but nod. You bring me respite, From grief and dispair, Everytime I see you, Sailing through the air. You renew my faith, In all Godís wondrous plan, And I know itís all in faith, Not in what I understand.

*****************

If I should go tomorrow It would never be goodbye, For I have left my heart with you, So donít you ever cry.

You can shed tears that she is gone Or you can smile because she has lived You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left Your heart can be empty because you canít see her Or you can be full of the love that you shared You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday You can remember her and only that she is gone Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I did not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die.

Gone yet not forgotten,
Although we are apart,
Your spirit lives within me,
Forever in my heart.

*****************

Like a shadow in the moonlight
Like the whisper of the seas
Like the echoes of a melody
Just beyond our reach
In the shadow of our sorrow
Past the whisper of goodbye
Love shines through eternity
A heartbeat from our eye

*****************

As long as hearts remember
As long as hearts still care
We do not part with those we love
They're with us everywhere

Here she lies, a pretty bud,
Lately made of flesh and blood:
Who as soon as fell fast asleep
As her little eyes did peep.
Give her strewings, but not stir
The earth that lightly covers her.

*****************

If I only had five minutes the day you passed away,
I would have had time to tell you all the things I needed to say.

I never got to tell you how much you mean to me,
Or that you were the best dad, better than any man could be.

Even such is Time, that takes in trust
Our youth, our joys, our all we have,
And pays us but with earth and dust;
Who in the dark and silent grave
When we have wandered all our ways,
Shuts up the story of our days;
But from this earth, this grave, this dust,
My God shall raise me up,I trust.

I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve,to dry before the sun;
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain:
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

Even those who grieve are gone,
And those that grieve who grieve,
And those whose lives are ravaged by.
A frantic urge to be,

And those who wander silently.
Among the empty rooms:
Immortality is theirs,
Though they must vanish, too.

We bear astonished witness to.
The passage of the soul.
No bridge exists that can connect.
Our passion to the whole.

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought.
I summon up remembrance of things past,

I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste:

Then can I drown an eye, unused to flow,
For precious friends hid in death's dateless night,

And weep afresh love's long since cancelled woe,
And moan the expense of many a vanished sight.

***************

To the Living, I am gone,
To the sorrowful, I will never return;

To the angry, I was cheated.
But to the happy, I am at peace.

To the faithful, I have never left.
Talk to me, and I will hear,

your prayers, they comfort me,
your laughter makes me laugh,

but don't weep for me as I have my reward,
I am with the Father and will never let me perish.

"Life is a journey.
Death is the continuation of the journey.

Heaven is a temporary rest.
For the commencement and fulfilment.

Of a new life, a new hope.
And a new promise".

***************

When I am gone, release me, let me go
I have so many things to see and do
You must not tie yourself to me with tears
Be happy that I have had so many years

***************

The pain will go away, with time
"It won't be so bad, after awhile
So say these friends of mine.
But they have never lost a child.
The pain will never go away
Yet it softens some, with time
My child is gone, it hurts to say
I'll never be "just fine

***************

Life is but a stopping place
A pause in what's to be
A resting place along the road
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys
Different paths along the way

***************

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path God has laid you see.
I took His hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all.

***************

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there.
I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.

***************

I walked away that morning, without a backward glance
I didn't know that moment was going to be our last.
The last time I would hold you or see your lovely face
The last time I would kiss you and feel your strong embrace.

***************

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free

***************

God saw u getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around you
and whispered,
"Come to Me"

***************

The world may never notice
If a Snowdrop doesn't bloom
Or even pause to wonder
If the petals fall too soon.

***************

We've known lots of pleasure,
At times endured pain,
We've lived in the sunshine
And walked in the rain.

***************

You never said I'm leaving
You never said goodbye
You were gone before I knew it
And only God knew why.

***************

Life, it moved from day to day
I cared for u, what more to say
One day up, one day down
Never mind, u'll come around.

***************

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain.

***************

Because I could not stop for Death
He kindly stopped for me
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.
